Why I Love Pharmaceutical Companies

Empty classic bottle with capsulesPharmaceutical companies…they’ve been given a bad rap. Conspiracy theories, cover ups, you name it. People in the “natural healing” world often hate them. Yes, in our home we try and approach life in a more natural way, but let’s face it; natural doesn’t always cut it! You can hate pharmaceutical companies all you want…until you really need them. I need them and that is why I love pharmaceutical companies.

I get migraines. Right now, I get them often. In the past fourteen days I’ve probably had eight days of migraines. They’re cyclical and not always this bad, but for whatever reason I’m in the middle of a flare up. Until I figure out the triggers, I need meds.

I have three kids ages 6, 5 and 2. My husband works a lot which means he’s gone a lot. He’s gone before the kids wake up and gets home after they go to bed. As you can imagine, this means I don’t have time for migraines. My kids don’t have time for my migraines either.

This past weekend my husband was out of town. It was about 5AM on Saturday and I woke up with a migraine. I dug into my purse to get my Zomig, got a glass of water, and popped the pill. I was lying there and could slowly and gradually feel the migraine ease. In my head I said countless times, “thank you God for making these meds work.” There’s always a science vs. God debate, but I believe God uses science…often to our benefit. I don’t care what anyone says, these pills are a blessing. They’re a blessing to me and a blessing to my family. Why are they a blessing?

You see, in about an hour and a half all three kids would be waking. Have you seen young kids in the morning? They’re on speed. They go from bed to fully functioning like a mustang goes from zero to sixty. It’s flat out admirable and I can’t believe I was ever capable of doing the same. Kids don’t need coffee to get them going. They have God given, crazy energy mere moments after waking. With that being said, I was moments away from being needed by three little people.

Yes, I’ve done acupuncture, chiropractic, massages, herbs, food exclusions and a variety of other things. Yes, they’re all helpful, but they’re not always enough. I’m crazy diligent and determined to find what is causing my migraines and I’m confident I’ll get them under control naturally. Until then, I need…actually my family needs for me to take these meds.

Do side effects happen? Absolutely! I lost a dear friend due to a rare side effect from medication. You know the “rare blood disorder” side effect that they talk about on the commercials? She ended up with exactly that and several years later lost her life. It was devastating. You know what though? Not ONCE did I ever hear her speak negatively about the pharmaceutical company that created those meds. No, these companies are not perfect and they have their share of issues. People do get hurt, but people also do get better. Actually, sometimes people are flat out given their life back because of the meds.

I don’t want to be popping these pills forever, but sometimes we have to do things we don’t want to do until we can find a better solution. With that being said, I’m thankful for scientists who pour their life and countless hours into creating and understanding drugs that make you and I feel better. I’m thankful for their role in allowing me to live, truly live, when there were many days that privilege would have been taken from me.
