Halfway Done With Whole30

Halfway done with whole30I was tired. I was sleeping later than usual. I was craving regular afternoon naps. And oh yeah, for about six weeks I was getting near-daily migraines. I was popping migraine pills like candy. Something had to change. With that being said, I’m happy to report I’m halfway done with Whole30. My hope is that this is the ticket to me feeling better.

For those of you who are not familiar with Whole30, it’s a nutritional program where you remove sugar, grains, dairy and legumes for thirty days.

Since I’m halfway done with Whole30, what are my observations?

Alright, let’s start with the first week.

The first few days were exciting. You know what I mean…the “new food plan” kind of excitement? The good news is you get this exciting energy the first few days to get you started. The bad news is…the excitement eventually ends. This is when your friend comes in to play….

Yep, this is when your discipline has to kick in. Which leads me to the rest of the week.

Day 3 was pretty uneventful. Day 4 I was exhausted. Day 5 was hell. Seriously, it was hard. I was so ridiculously exhausted I thought I was going to fall over. I’m not exaggerating. Oh, I also wanted popcorn and I wanted popcorn something fierce.

The fatigue continued through days 6 and 7, but not nearly as bad. I no longer felt like I was going to fall over. I may survive after all.

Day 8 was epic. Out of nowhere, I had this amazing energy. I noticed I was CRANKING through some serious housework at amazing speed. As my husband said, I was like the bionic woman. I got up at 4AM and continued to get up at 4AM the majority of the week to work and read (seriously, it’s the time of day where I get the most done…uninterrupted).

Days 8-14 were pretty uneventful and I was approaching being halfway done with Whole30. I did notice something interesting around days 10-12. I would scroll through Facebook and see pictures of all kinds of yummy food, and I was like “yuck.” Not because it looked yucky, but because just looking at it made me realize how yucky it would make me feel. I feel so good now that I don’t want to ruin this feeling for an ice cream cone or colossal dish of fettuccine alfredo.

Did I mention I have not had one single migraine since day 2? The migraine I had on day 2 was actually leftover from before I began the program (my migraines last a minimum of three days). With that being said, I have not had a single migraine since starting! This-is-great-news! Maybe I’ll salvage my liver after all.

Another interesting observation. I have not thought once about quitting. I feel so much better that the thought hasn’t even crossed my mind.

Ok. So what have I been eating on the program? Here are some pics of just a few of the things I’ve been eating.

For breakfast, I typically have 2-3 eggs, red peppers and celery with almond butter.

Lunch is simple. A good ‘ol sweet potato every single day with some coconut oil and sea or Himalayan salt. I’ll sometimes have some chicken with it too.

Dinner varies. Last week, I made this this wonderful chicken and veggie soup (recipe to follow in a few days).

Some fish with veggies is always yummy. Any Whole30 approved meat is an option. I had a few potatoes too.

What about snacks? You’re not supposed to snack, but on days I exercise, I get really hungry. Here is what I took on a field trip with my son when I knew I wouldn’t be getting home until well after lunch time. Apple, trail mix and tomatoes.
